For as long as I can remember, I have been a procrastinator. My mother still talks about it to this day. I was always the child letting her know I had a HUGE project…oh and it was always around 7p the night before. Here’s the thing about procrastination, it doesn’t actually help. It turns mountains out of molehills. It produces something in us that frankly, feels down right icky. And that ickiness…the gremlins that are anxiety and worry…don’t actually go away until we move off dead center and do something.
In March 2015, I was sitting in my corner office with my dream job. I had worked 13 long, hard, incredibly, awesome years to land this job. I had made it! And I had made it before my 35th birthday…which of course, was always the goal. And yet, there in the midst of the dream job, I was feeling icky. The gremlins were popping up all the time.
They kept saying…is this really what you want? Do you even like doing this still? You’ve made it, but now what? Is this it? Like really? Really it? Forever it? And like my typical self, I tried to silence the gremlins by ignoring them. I did whatever I could to make it go away. You see, I had it. I had everything that I ever thought I wanted. Have you experienced that? It’s supposed to be amazing. And yet, it wasn’t. The more I tried to ignore the gremlins, the louder they got. Unlike the deadline of a project, I wasn’t forced to do anything about it. So the gremlins just kept getting louder and louder and louder.
Until one day, I was forced to do something. May 7, I resigned. June 1, I woke up without a job, without a corner office, and without the dream title. It was a choice I made, but damn, if it wasn’t the hardest one.
Fast forward, and life looks very different today. I am building a business I love with clients I adore! But here’s the thing, I had to move off dead center to get where I am today. When we put off doing something, we are actually making a choice. Often times, we tell ourselves that if we do nothing, then nothing will happen. That’s not necessarily true. The one thing that is certain if we do nothing, is that we will never know what could actually be. All of the growth that we experience is in the doing part of life. The gremlins we experience, the tightness or gurgling in our belly, that’s our body’s natural way of telling us that what we are preparing for may be scary. I know you know what I am talking about. We have all seen the pics on Instagram or Facebook that has two circles. One says “comfort zone” and the other says “where the magic happens”. It’s true! Outside of the comfort zone is where the magic happens. What the picture doesn’t say is in order to get from one circle to the other circle, you have to take ACTION. You can’t just sit, and worry, and think, and ponder, and procrastinate…you have to move.
And when you move forward, is when the magic starts happening.
And while we are talking about moving, may I offer up that action doesn’t have to be linear. In fact, most of the time it isn’t. I know people that won’t take action because they are worried about 927 steps later. We’re on step 3…not step 926. And guess what…you can always course correct, turn around, turn to the left, turn to the right, hell, you can even do-si-do if you want. So, my question to you today is, where in your life do you need to move? Where do you need to get off dead center and take action? If in one year, your life could look completely different if you take action, why are you still sitting there? If you are looking for permission to do it, here it is. Take the step. Take the leap. Move forward. The action is where the magic happens!
Giving you permission to move,
